What is RTO
Regional Transport Office (RTO) or Regional Transport Authority (RTA) is a Government agency that works under the supervision of the Transport Department.
Every state has its own regional Transport office. It’s responsibilities are to resolve issues regarding vehicle registration, driving license, and Tax collection. They also ensure the implementation of rules and regulations on the road, etc. The RTO provides online information regarding vehicle’s RC status. Moreover, registration of the vehicle is an important and legal requirement. This law has been imposed at every corner of the world to ensure the safety, infrastructure and financial responsibility of the country. Registered vehicles are easy to enforce laws and recover if it is lost. Registration of the vehicle is also good for financial purpose. In case of any mishap/accident it gives relief to the owner in the form of vehicle insurance hence, It acts as a financial safety as well.
RTO Vehicle Registration Process
Registration of the vehicle is necessary because it ensures ownership authentication, tracking if it is lost, and for the purpose of tax collection, etc. Here is the process of registration:
1. Temporary Registration certificate (RC)
- It is issued while purchasing vehicle by the dealer/seller.
- Its validity is for 7 to 30 days only. That period is given to apply for the permanent registration.
2. Permanent Registration: If you have bought a new vehicle then hurry up and get its RC from your local RTO office.
- Visit your nearest RTO office with the necessary documents
- Submit form 20 (application for vehicle registration).
- The sales certificate of your vehicle (the dealer will provide you)
- Manufacturer’s certificate and Form 21 ( issued by the dealer)
- A fitness certificate Form 22 provided by the dealer
- A copy of a valid insurance policy
- Proof of address like card, passport, etc
- A pollution under control (PUC) certificate
- Receipt for road tax payment
- Your PAN card, or Form 60 The RTO will then inspect the vehicle and check/verify all the documents If everything is clear and genuine then they will issue the permanent Registration certificate.

How To Get a Duplicate RC
Did you lose your original registration certificate don’t worry you can get a duplicate RC by the method given below
First of all, go to the police station and file a FIR
If you bought a vehicle through a bank loan then obtain an NOC (Non-Objection Certificate) from a bank
Visit the RTO and submit Form 26 along with the required documents.
Pay the fee and receive the duplicate registration certificate.
Documents Required
- The application to issue the duplicate registration certificate or Form 26.
- Police certificate from the police department in the area where you loss the original RC.
- PUC Certificate
- An insurance certificate of the vehicle.
- A document which acts as proof of address for the owner of the motor vehicle in question.
- If the motor vehicle is commercial, a challan clearance from the traffic police and Enforcement Transport Wing is also required.
- Tax clearance certificate is also required.
- PAN card of the owner of the motor vehicle or Form 60 and Form 61.
- A print of the engine chassis and engine pencil of the motor vehicle is also required.
- The motor vehicle owner’s signature identification is to be provided as well.
- The affidavit which states that the original registration certificate is lost.
